Giacomo Gaglione (born July 20, 1896 in Marcianise , Province of Caserta , Campania , Italy ; † May 28, 1962 in Capodrise , Province of Caserta, Campania, Italy) was a Catholic Italian member of the Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis (Franciscan Community). On April 3, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI awarded him the honorary title of Venerable Servant of God . The Congregation for the Causes of Saints has initiated the process of his beatification .

Life

Gaglione was born into a wealthy family in Marcianise in the province of Caserta . At the age of 16 the first symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis became noticeable. He found himself in bed with paralyzed legs. Medical treatments with various methods did not lead to any improvement in his condition.

In 1919 Gaglione visited the well-known Capuchin Pio of Pietrelcina in the hope of a cure. Instead, however, this meeting led him to accept his illness as a Christian mission. He became a spiritual son of the monk, who continued to support him, allegedly with the gift of bilocation . In January 1921 he was examined by a doctor, later Saint Giuseppe Moscati , and in August of the same year he joined the Franciscan Community. He made his confession the following year under the name of Francis, in honor of Francis of Assisi .

In August 1929, after 17 years of immobility, Gaglione made the first of his nine pilgrimages to Lourdes, an experience that later became the basis of his first book: Il pellegrinaggio di un'anima (meaning the pilgrimage of the soul ). There he founded the L'apostolato della sofferenza ( Apostolate of Suffering ), a spiritual brotherhood that was supposed to serve to convince the sick of God's love. The institution found the support of the Bishop of Caserta, Gabriele Moriondo . The founder was by Pope Pius XI. received, who bestowed on him the award Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice , while in November 1944 Pope Pius XII. appointed him Commander of the New Year's Eve . Since 1952 the Apostolate has published its own magazine, Ostie sul mondo . At this time Gaglione was publishing his second book, Allo specchio della mia anima ( In the mirror of my soul ).

On October 20, 1961, Gaglione published his last book: 50 anni di croce per saper sorridere ( 50 years on the cross to be able to smile ).

Gaglione died in Capodrise on May 28, 1962 . Many people from all over Italy turned up at his funeral the next day. In 1965, at the will of the church authorities, his remains were transferred to the local parish church of St. Andrew.
