Giancarlo Petrini

Giancarlo Petrini ( pt. João Carlos Petrini ; born November 18, 1945 in Fermo ) is an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Camaçari .

Life

Giancarlo Petrini initially studied political science at the University of Perugia from 1965 to 1970 . He joined the Comunione e Liberazione movement and went to Brazil as a lay missionary in the Archdiocese of São Paulo . Here he studied at the Theological Faculty Nossa Senhora da Assunção and was ordained deacon for the Archdiocese of Fermo on September 14, 1974 . The Coadjutor Archbishop of Fermo, Cleto Bellucci , ordained him a priest on June 28, 1975 .

From the beginning of his priestly activity he worked as a Fidei Donum priest in Brazil, first in the Archdiocese of São Paulo and from 1988 in the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia . He graduated from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo with a degree in social sciences and worked in higher education pastoral care.

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in São Salvador da Bahia and titular bishop of Augurus on January 12, 2005 . The Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia, Geraldo Majella Cardinal Agnelo , donated him episcopal ordination on March 10 of the same year ; Co - consecrators were Walmor Oliveira de Azevedo , auxiliary bishop in São Salvador da Bahia, and Cleto Bellucci, old archbishop of Fermo. As a motto he chose Habitavit in nobis .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on December 15, 2010 as the first bishop of the diocese of Camaçari established on the same date .
