Life

Economic manager, local politician and member of the Second Chamber

Van Aardenne, son of a surgeon and mathematician Tatjana van Aardenne-Ehrenfest , began studying mathematics and natural sciences at the University of Leiden in 1947 after attending primary school and the public Erasmiaansch Gymnasium in Rotterdam , which he passed the state examination on July 6, 1955 completed. After completing his military service as a lieutenant in the reserve, he began his professional career on September 1, 1957 as an employee at NV Koninklijke Fabrieken Penn Bauduin , an iron and steel factory based in Dordrecht. After serving as deputy director between July 1, 1960 and January 1, 1968, he served as director of NV Koninklijke Fabrieken Penn Bauduin between January 1, 1968 and January 1, 1971 .

In addition to his professional activity, van Aardenne began his political commitment in the mid-1960s for the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD), which he joined in 1958 and was a member of the board of the VVD Dordrecht. First he was between March 17, 1964 and December 19, 1977 a member of the municipal council of Dordrecht and during this time from July 2, 1970 to May 30, 1972 alderman ( Wethouder ) for public health, leisure and sport of Dordrecht. He was then between May 1972 and December 1977 chairman of the VVD parliamentary group in the Dordrecht local council. He was also chairman of the board of directors of the Dordrecht community hospital and of the Dordrecht tourist association, member of the council for hospitals and member of the supervisory board of the Bondsspaarbank in Breda .

On February 18, 1971, he became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for the first time, where he initially represented the interests of the VVD until May 10, 1971. On August 3, 1971, van Aardenne was again a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for the VVD and was a member of this until December 19, 1977.

Minister and Vice Prime Minister

Van Aardenne was appointed by Prime Minister Dries van Agt as Minister of Economic Affairs (Minister van Economische Zaken) in his first cabinet on December 19, 1977 and was a member of this until September 11, 1981. After the resignation of Frans Andriessen, he also held the post of finance minister (Minister van Financiën ad Interim) between February 22, 1980 and his replacement by Fons van der Stee on March 6, 1980 .

On August 27, 1981, he was re-elected as a member of the Second Chamber of the States General for the VVD, to which he belonged until November 4, 1982. For his longstanding services he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Dutch Lion on October 26, 1981 .

In the elections of September 8, 1982, the Christian Democratic Party ( Christen-Democratisch Appèl , CDA) lost slightly, while the VVD was the winner and has now joined forces with the Christian Democrats led by Ruud Lubbers to form a center-right government. Ruud Lubbers became Prime Minister and on November 4, 1982 appointed van Aardenne Vice Prime Minister (Viceminister-President) and Minister of Economics in his first cabinet. Van Aardenne faced severe criticism in 1984 when he had to admit that he had made misleading statements in Parliament in 1980 about his subsidy commitments to the shipbuilding and mechanical engineering group RSV, which was later dissolved. However, he only intended to protect the state from harm. The bankruptcy of RVE cost the Netherlands 3 billion guilders in subsidies. Nevertheless, van Ardenne survived a motion of censure brought against him by the Social Democratic Party and held the offices of Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economics until July 14, 1986. After leaving the government, on August 26, 1986, he was also commander of the order appointed by Orange-Nassau .

After he had not held any political office since July 14, 1986, van Aardenne was between 1993 and 1994 chairman of the party commission for the nomination of the VVD candidates for the parliamentary elections in 1994. After the 1994 election, as a so-called information technician , he was instrumental in bringing about the involved in the first cabinet of Wim Kok .

Most recently he himself became a member of the First Chamber of the States General on June 13, 1995 and was a member of the Upper House of the States General until his death almost two months later on August 10, 1995.

His marriage to Marijke Hillegonde Eerligh on September 22, 1956 in Leiden resulted in two sons and two daughters.
