Gilbert Charles-Picard

Gilbert Charles-Picard (actually Gilbert-Étienne-Charles Picard, born October 15, 1913 in Nercillac , Charente department , Poitou-Charentes region in France , † December 21, 1998 in Versailles ) was a French classical archaeologist specializing in Roman North Africa .

Life

Charles-Picard was the son of the classical archaeologist Charles Picard (1883-1965). After studying at the École Pratique des Hautes Études , he went to Rome from 1938 to 1940 at the École française de Rome . Because of the beginning of the war he had to leave Rome. He began his scientific career in the French protectorate of Tunisia , where he became interim director of the Antiquities Authority of Tunisia on January 1, 1942. Here his interest in the Roman Maghreb was aroused and he took part in the excavations of the Castellum Dimmidi in Algeria . In 1946 he became director of the Tunisian Antiquities Service and was from 1954 to 1955 at the same time professor at the Institut des Hautes Études in Tunis . His sister Yvonne died as a member of the Resistance in Auschwitz .

In 1955 Charles-Picard was appointed professor of Roman history at the University of Strasbourg . From 1959 to 1983 he was Professor of Archeology and Ancient Art History at the University of Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) . During these years he published a number of books, some together with his wife and son. At the same time he conducted research in the field of Gallo-Roman culture in his home country.

Charles-Picard has received numerous honors for his research, for example he was a corresponding member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (1958) and the Pontificia Accademia Romana di Archeologia (1970) as well as the German Archaeological Institute . He was Officier de la Légion d'Honneur , commander of the Nischan el Iftikhar and officer of the Ordre de la République et du Mérite culturel de Tunisie .

Charles-Picard's wife was the ancient historian Colette Picard, who was active in the excavations in Carthage . Charles-Picard had six children with Colette, including the archaeologist Olivier Picard .
