Gilles Marchand (born March 2, 1962 in Lausanne ) is a sociologist with French and Swiss roots. Since October 1, 2017, he has been Director General of the Swiss Radio and Television Corporation (SRG SSR) .

Life

Gilles Marchand grew up in Paris and Trélex near Nyon (VD). He attended schools in Divonne and Ferney-Voltaire (F), where he graduated from high school . He then began studying sociology at the University of Geneva , which he completed with a master's degree.

In 1985 he became the editor of art books and guides at Chapalay et Mottier SA before moving to Tribune Éditions, a subsidiary of the Tribune de Genève . In 1988 he became responsible for reader research and marketing at the Tribune de Genève. After two years as a consultant in the media sector, he became head of the reader research and marketing department in 1993 and director of Ringier Romandie , publisher of L'Hebdo , L'iilustré , TV8 , Edelweiss (now Bolero ), Montres Passion and Gault-Millau Switzerland in 1998 .

In 2001 he was elected director of Télévision Suisse Romande (TSR). In 2010 he was responsible for merging radio, television and online to form Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS), of which he became director. He was also a member of the Executive Board of SRG SSR and Deputy Director General. In 2016, he was elected General Director of SRG SSR to succeed Roger de Weck , taking office on October 1, 2017.

From 2013 to 2017, Gilles Marchand was an ad personam member of the Federal Media Commission (EMEK) set up by the Federal Council . Until 2015 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Publisuisse SA (SRG marketing company). He is also a director of TV5 Monde and a member of the Executive Board of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and the Strategic Committee of the University of Geneva. He founded “Les Médias Francophones Publics” and was President of the organization until 2017.

Gilles Marchand is married to Victoria Marchand, publisher and editor-in-chief of Cominmag, a digital marketing and communication platform in western Switzerland. With her he has a daughter and a son. He has lived in Bern since taking office as Director General of SRG SSR . In his spare time he travels and rides.
