Baron Giovanni Antonio Amedeo Plana (born November 6, 1781 in Voghera , † January 20, 1864 in Turin ) was an Italian astronomer and mathematician.

In 1817 he married Alessandra Lagrange, the niece of the famous mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange , whose student he had been at the École polytechnique in Paris around 1800 . Plana worked for a long time as professor of astronomy and director of the Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino (Turin observatory) and as a senator.

In 1826 he became a corresponding and in 1860 a foreign member of the Académie des sciences . As a foreign member, he had been a member of the Royal Society since 1827 , and was awarded the Copley Medal in 1834. In 1832 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1835 he became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1837 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In December 1839 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg , and in 1864 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences . In addition, the lunar crater Plana was named after him.
