Life

Odazzi was a student of Ciro Ferri and Cornelis Blomaert , then works under Giovanni Battista Gaulli (Bacciccio). Finally he went to Carlo Maratta , under whom Odazzi further developed his art. On March 2, he became a member of the Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon and on January 10, 1706 a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. The frescoes in Santa Maria in Aracoeli , based on the style of his teacher Bacciccio, are considered to be his earliest works. In 1710 he was commissioned by Cardinal Giovanni Maria Gabrielli to paint 2 panels for San Bernardo alle Terme . The ceiling fresco with the fall of the angel in SS. Apostoli , made a year earlier, with its figures integrated into the existing architectural elements, is an impressive example of illusionism , of which Andrea Pozzo was the most important representative . Under the pontificate of Pope Clement XI. Odazzi worked from 1614 to 1616 on the decoration of San Clemente and in 1618 in the San Giovanni in Laterano . Stylistically, Odazzi and Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari took on a leading role in the Roman Rococo after the death of Carlo Maratta (1713), which gave important impulses to Italian art of the 18th century. His brothers Antonio (around 1663-1731), Nicola (1673-1750) and Pietro Odazzi (1659-1727) was also a painter in Rome.
