Giovanni Pintori

Giovanni Pintori (* 1912 in Tresnuraghes near Nuoro in Sardinia , Italy ; † November 15, 1999 in Milan ) was an Italian designer and graphic artist specializing in commercial graphics , painter and draftsman .

life and work

Giovanni Pintori learned and worked as a typesetter from 1927 to 1929 . In 1930 he won one of two scholarships from the Consorzio dell'Economia Corporativa (the other scholarship went to Salvatore Fancello ) and from 1930 to 1936 studied design and advertising at the Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche in Monza .

In 1936, Pintori was employed as an advertising designer at Olivetti in Milan and then from 1950 to 1967 head of the Olivetti advertising department.

Among other things, Pintori designed the advertising posters for the adding machines " Elettrosumma 22 " and " Tekne 3 " designed by Marcello Nizzoli and the advertisement for Nizzoli's famous typewriter " Lettera 22 ". Pintori also designed the Olivetti logo and designed numerous exhibitions for the company.

In 1950 Pintori received the Palma d'Oro and in 1957 the Grand Prize of the Milan Triennale. In 1952, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City organized a major industrial design exhibition where Olivetti's work was abundant. In 1953 Giovanni Pintori became a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale AGI. In 1955 he received the Certificate of Excellence of Graphic Arts from the Association of American Graphic Artists . In 1964, some of Pintori's posters for Olivetti and the advertising posters for " Lettera 22 " were shown in the graphics department at documenta III in Kassel .

In 1967 Pintori settled down as a freelance graphic artist and designer and founded his own design office in Milan in 1968. He worked for the magazines " Stile Industria ", " Fortune ", " Graphic Design " and " Horizon " and was also active for Pirelli .
