Gianni Pittella (born November 19, 1958 in Lauria , Province of Potenza ) is an Italian politician ( PD ). He was a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2018 , one of the Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament from 2009-14 and chairman of the political group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats (S&D) from 2014-18 . He has been a member of the Italian Senate since March 4, 2018 .

Gianni Pittella is the son of former Senator Domenico Pittella . His younger brother Marcello is also a politician and has been the regional president of Basilicata since 2013 .

Like his father, Gianni Pittella was initially a member of the Partito Socialista Italiano (PSI) and regional secretary of the party's youth organization Giovani Socialisti . From 1979 to 1980, Pittella was a councilor. He then became a member of the regional council of Basilicata and advisor for education and culture as well as for the manufacturing industry. After the disintegration of the PSI in 1994, he belonged to the small party Federazione Laburista , which in 1998 became part of the Democratici di Sinistra (DS; Left Democrats).

From 1999 he was a member of the European Parliament for the constituency of southern Italy, initially as a member of the DS, until it merged with other center-left parties to form the Partito Democratico (PD) in 2007 . In his first two legislative terms (1999–2009) he was a member of the Committee on Budgets , and from 1999 to 2002 he was also deputy chairman of the delegations in the parliamentary committees for cooperation on relations with Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

From 2009 to 2014 he was Vice President of the European Parliament. He was also a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection from 2009–12 , the Committee on Culture and Education from 2012–14 and the Delegation for relations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo from 2009–14. From June 18 to July 1, 2014 he took over the office of President of the EU Parliament on an interim basis, succeeding Martin Schulz . When he was re-elected President of Parliament and gave up the office of chairman of the S&D parliamentary group , Pittella also succeeded Schulz in this office. Until he left the European Parliament in March 2018, he was also a delegate to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly.

In the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2018 , Pittella was elected to the Senate and then gave up his mandate in the European Parliament. Giuseppe Ferrandino moved up for him .
