Giulio Superti-Furga (born May 17, 1962 in Milan ) is an Italian molecular and systems biologist based in Vienna and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Research Council (ERC European Research Council) .

Superti-Furga is Scientific Director of the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Professor of Molecular Systems Biology at the Medical University of Vienna .

His most significant scientific achievements include the elucidation of basic regulatory mechanisms of tyrosine kinases , which are important in human cancer , the determination of the precise molecular mode of action of several drugs, the discovery of crucial organizational principles of the proteome and lipidome of higher organisms, and the characterization of the molecular components which play a role in innate immunity. His work has contributed directly to a systematic understanding of infections caused by pathogens as well as the mechanisms of action of certain drugs . He is an advocate for systems biologyApproaches in medicine and drug research and, as Scientific Director of CeMM, has made the promotion of precise and predictive medicine by combining free-spirited basic research with clinical expertise and innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches his central concern. He recently pointed out the fact that membrane transporters at the interface between biological systems and their environment - regardless of their relevance for medicine and drug research - have not been adequately researched and that a coordinated, systematic initiative on the part of science is required.

According to Google Scholar , Superti-Furga has published over 200 manuscripts that have been cited over 28,000 times. His current research focuses on the effects of drugs and personalized medicine .

Life

Superti-Furga attended the German School in Milan (DSM). He studied molecular biology at the University of Zurich , at Genentech Inc. in San Francisco and at the Research Institute for Molecular Pathology (IMP) in Vienna. After receiving his doctorate, Superti-Furga worked as a research assistant at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, where he became team leader in 1995. From 1997 to 2000 he was visiting professor in molecular biology at the University of Bologna in Italy. In 2000 he was the co-founder and Scientific Director of the biotech company Cellzome Inc., and he is also a co-founder of the biotech companies Haplogen and Allcyte. Since 2005 he has been Scientific Director of CeMM; the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and since 2015 Professor of Molecular Systems Biology at the Medical University of Vienna . Furthermore, he is a real member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina , the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), European Academy of Cancer Sciences , Academia Europaea and was chairman of the EMBL alumni association until the end of 2015 has about 1500 members. From 2013 to 2015, the eight appointed or elected members of the University Council of the University of Vienna elected Superti-Furga as the ninth member.

In 2009 he was honored with the Great Medal of Honor of the Order for Services to the Italian Republic for his scientific merits . In the same year he was awarded an Advanced Investigator Grant from the European Research Council . In 2011, Superti-Furga was awarded the City of Vienna's Prize for Natural Sciences and named “Austria's Scientist of the Year”. In June 2017 he was honored by the Republic of Italy with the title "Commendatore" (Commander) for his services to the Italian Republic.

Superti-Furga also deals with the social and ethical effects and framework conditions of biomedical research. In general, the CeMM focuses on a special quality in the dialogue with society and on the responsible use of resources and technologies. Since the end of 2014 Giulio Superti-Furga has been the chairman of the Steering Board (steering committee) and participant in the Personal Genome Project “Genom Austria”. The aim of this education and science project is to proactively deal with the most diverse aspects of genome sequencing. Superti-Furga also took part: his personal genome sequence PGA1 is publicly available. He is probably the first person in continental Europe whose entire genome has been published in this way.

In January 2017 Giulio Superti-Furga started his four-year term as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Research Council. The ERC (European Research Council) is the most important and most renowned institution for funding basic research in the European Union, with the aim of promoting scientific excellence and "pioneering research".
