Faith and Home is an Austrian silent film by Emerich Hanus from 1920 with the actors of the Exl-Bühne .

action

For centuries, Christians from Tyrol and Salzburg were driven from their homeland - because they were Protestants. It tells the story of “Alpine” farming families who, following an edict from Emperor Ferdinand I , are given the choice of either renouncing their allegedly “heretical” Lutheran faith or emigrating. “Malicious men with their wives are to be driven out; the women who believe in good faith are allowed to stay in their houses, ”said an imperial messenger in the Schönherr play.

An arch-Catholic monk offers himself to the ruler to carry out his orders in the most cruel manner. He is even knighted for his relentless way of driving the old Protestant farmer Rott and his family from house and farm. Despite these difficult experiences and strokes of fate, old Rott is not looking for revenge. Rather, his faith proves stronger: for he grants forgiveness to his tormentor. Impressed by so much generosity, the monk also understands the catastrophic error of his actions, but it is too late.

criticism

Paimann's film lists summed up: “The material is very dramatic, the photos, play and scenery are excellent. (A hit). "

“Unmatched by the rounded representation of the Exl people. We know and appreciate her stage performances and are all the more surprised to find her in her place in the film. The Rottbauer couple of the two exls did not miss the dramatic impact in the film. Köck as Altrottbauer, floodplains as Sandperger are of moving creative power. The staging of magnificent effect. "

Varia

The stage play and possibly also the silent film gave its name to the German Protestant church newspaper Glaube und Heimat in Thuringia, which was founded in 1924 .
