Ferdinand Exl (born August 27, 1875 in Innsbruck ; † October 28, 1942 there ) was an Austrian actor and founder and long-time director of the Tyrolean theater group Exl-Bühne .

Life

After appearances at the Farmer's Theater in Pradl , he founded the “First Tyrolean Farmer's Game Society” in Wilten, which gave its first performance on March 31, 1902 with Ludwig Anzengruber's pastor from Kirchfeld in the Austrian court and subsequently as an Exl stage with the performance of Folk and peasant pieces, among others by Anzengruber, Karl Schönherr , Franz Kranewitter  and Rudolf Brix , achieved great fame. The theater later moved to Innsbruck, where Ferdinand Exl directed the Innsbruck City Theater from 1915 to 1920 and founded the Innsbruck Kammerspiele in 1919, which he directed until 1922. From 1927 to 1931 Exl was artistic director of the Raimund Theater in Vienna (under the direction of Rudolf Beer) . Occasionally he also appeared in folk film productions, mostly with other members of the Exl-stage ensemble, such as in 1921 in Glaube und Heimat , in 1939 in Der Feuerteufel and 1941 in Der Meineidbauer .

As early as 1933 he joined the NSDAP, which was illegal in Austria at the time. Like many others, after the “Anschluss” of Austria in 1938, he made himself available to Nazi propaganda for the Viennese artists' appeal for a “ referendum ”. Highly valued in the Third Reich, the ensemble celebrated success as a "Wehrmacht stage" and played, among other things, in 1944 for the SS guards at the Auschwitz concentration camp .

After his death in 1942, his wife Anna Exl and their daughter Ilse took over the management of the Exl-Bühne, which was dissolved in 1956.

Honors

In 1942 Ferdinand Exl became an honorary citizen of Innsbruck. In 1962, Exlgasse in the Innsbruck district of Höttinger Au was named after him. In Wörgl reminiscent Ferdinand Exl-Straße at him. A memorial plaque with a bust of Exl was attached to the successor building of the Austrian court in Wilten to commemorate the founding conception.
