The school is named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . The school was founded in 1955. It was built according to the plans of the Hanoverian architect Harald Leonhardt . The new student body consisted of former students from the Helene-Lange-Schule, the Sophienschule and the Leibnizschule and included a total of seven classes from grades five to seven. The school saw itself as the successor to the old Königliche Goethegymnasium (Lyzeum II), which was dissolved in 1945. At the time the school was built, the official name was "Branch of the Sophienschule", unofficially "Oberschule Rumannstrasse". A name change made it the "Goetheschule" (high school for boys and girls) in 1956. In 1955 the school was housed in a building at Rumannstraße 26A, and in 1956 it moved to the building of the current Tellkampfschule , Altenbekener Damm 83. On January 8, 1957, school operations were continued in the new building on Halthoffstrasse, the current location of the main office. At the time of moving in, the address was "Rühlmannstrasse 14". The street was later renamed, so that the address today is "Franziusweg 43".

A leaf of the ginkgo tree has served as the school's logo since 1996 . The tree found in Goethe 's east-west divan is intended to symbolize community.

In September 2007, the Goetheschule gave itself a school motto with the Goethe quote: If you are not curious, you will not learn anything .

Educational offer

Since the late 1970s, the school has been running a voluntarily selectable branch of music with expanded requirements and support in the subject of music, including the compulsory learning of an orchestral instrument. There are also natural science classes, as well as classes that focus on theater art.

In addition to French and Latin, Chinese is taught as a second foreign language at the school. Furthermore, there is a partially bound all-day operation in the branch office, the promotion of gifted children and numerous working groups.

Partner schools and exchange programs

There are regular international exchange programs with schools in Bristol (England), Gérardmer (France), Fort Smith (USA), Wrocław (Poland) and Shanghai (China). The partnership with the Cotham School in Bristol , the British twin town of the school location Hanover, was initiated in 1995 and is thus the oldest continuous exchange program at the Goetheschule.

Spatial situation

The building was designed by the architect Leonhardt, who is employed by the municipal building department, and has since been expanded. A new wing (D) has been completed and integrated into the business along the Halthoffstrasse on the area of the former sports field of the school. The existing Goetheschule is currently being renovated. The main office is currently in the building of the Limmer high school, Wunstorfer Straße 14, 30453 Hanover.

The A-wing and the B-wing as well as the auditorium are being renovated and significantly expanded, the C-wing has been removed, and a new three-field sports hall will be added to a D-wing, which has also been enlarged. The work should be completed by summer 2019, but has been delayed so that completion is now expected by the end of January 2020.
