Borrow Me Your Husband is an American comedy film from 1964, starring Jack Lemmon and Romy Schneider . It is based on the novel of the same name by Jack Finney .
action
Sam Bissell works for the Burke & Hare advertising agency in San Francisco . When an important client of the agency, Simon Nurdlinger, complained about the agency's immoral advertising, Sam's idea of tailoring advertising entirely to the American average consumer and their needs was just right. Burke & Hare receives the order for the next advertising campaign from Nurdlinger and Sam is promoted to the responsible advertising clerk for Nurdlinger products.
He would like to celebrate his advancement at home with his wife Mini, and meets her friend Janet, who has just arrived from Europe. Janet inherited $ 15 million from her grandfather. There is only one catch: in order to inherit, she has to live with her husband Howard. However, she is currently separated from him and the divorce proceedings are pending. Should anyone be able to prove that she is no longer with her husband, the inheritance would go to her relatives Irene and Jack.
Irene and Jack are naturally eager for the inheritance and visit Janet, who has rented the neighboring Bissell's house, to check whether she fulfills the conditions of the will. Janet is in dire straits and pretends to be Sam as her husband Howard. But the relatives are suspicious and hire a private detective to investigate the matter.
Janet persuades Sam to continue playing and wants him to part with the inheritance with a million dollars. The situation becomes more complicated when Mr. Burke looks for an ideal average couple for Sam's idea and chooses Sam and his wife Janet. Whereby Mr. Burke thinks Janet is Sam's wife, since he has never seen the real Mrs. Bissell before.
Meanwhile, the real husband, Howard, wants to return to Janet. He is privy to the matter and lives with Mini, while Sam stays at Janet's house until she can finally take over the inheritance.
When billboards are set up all over town showing Sam and Janet as the Bissell couple, the dizziness threatens to be exposed. In a nightly rescue operation, Sam, Janet and Howard paint over the traitorous posters.
In the end, Sam can go back to his Minerva and Howard to the newly minted millionaire Janet.
