Gordon H. Bower

Gordon Howard Bower (born December 30, 1932 in Scio , Ohio - † June 17, 2020 in Stanford , California ) was an American psychologist .

Life

Bower studied at Western Reserve University (bachelor's degree in 1954) and originally wanted to become a psychiatrist, but then turned to psychology and, after gaining a master's degree in 1957, received a doctorate in experimental psychology (learning theory) from Yale University two years later in 1959 . He then went to Stanford University , where he became an assistant professor in 1959 and a full professorship in 1966. In 2008 he retired.

In 1987 he was visiting professor in Marburg and in 2003 and 2005 at the University of Texas at Austin . In 1992/93 he was Chief Scientific Advisor to the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health .

He dealt in particular with memory research (including computer models of memory, memory aids), conditioning, learning, language comprehension, modification of behavior.

In 2005 he received the National Medal of Science . In 1973 he became a member of the National Academy of Sciences , 1975 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and 2004 the American Philosophical Society . In 1967 he was the founder of the Cognitive Science Society and in 1987/88 its president. He was President of the Western Psychological Society and from 1991 to 1993 of the American Psychological Society and has multiple honorary doctorates (Basel, Indiana State University , University of Chicago ). From 1993 to 2006 he was Chief Scientific Advisor of the American Psychological Association.

He married Sharon Anthony Bower in 1957, with whom he has three children.
