Gottfried Leonhardt

Gottfried Leonhardt (born May 24, 1919 in Johanngeorgenstadt ; † January 8, 2018 in Leipzig ) was a German graphic artist and illustrator .

Live and act

Gottfried Leonhardt attended elementary school and then completed an apprenticeship at a commercial school. After the Second World War, he attended the painting and drawing school in Zwickau (MuZ) from 1950 to 1952 and studied at the Berlin School of Applied Arts from 1954 to 1958.

From 1960 he worked as a magazine and book designer at the specialist book publisher Leipzig . During this time, he completed an external degree in typography at the Leipzig University of Graphic Art and Book Art from 1963 , which he graduated with a diploma in 1967. From 1975 to 1990 he was artistic director of the German publishing house for basic industry in Leipzig. The books illustrated and designed by Gottfried Leonhardt were shown at exhibitions such as the International Book Art Exhibition , Most Beautiful Books from All Over the World , Most Beautiful Books of the GDR and the Art Exhibition of the GDR . The children's books he illustrated, Family Star and Grandpa Paul, and Dragon Flying , appeared in several languages.

In his retirement, he mainly created graphics that, through his personal experiences, deal with the suffering of Christ on the one hand and the Second World War on the other. The works were shown in churches such as the Friedenskirche and the Gnadenkirche in Leipzig as well as in several barracks. In 2016, the Lehmhaus-Galerie in Zwenkau showed a cross-section of his work with 40 watercolors, graphics and collages by Gottfried Leonhardt.

Gottfried Leonhardt died in Leipzig in January 2018 at the age of 98.
