Most beautiful books of the GDR

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the German Democratic Republic (GDR), from 1952 onwards, the “Most Beautiful Books of the GDR” were awarded annually by the Ministry of Culture. The jury at the Exchange Association of German Booksellers in Leipzig consisted of personalities from the Pirckheimer Society at the Kulturbund der GDR and the Association of Visual Artists (VBK), as well as prominent representatives of the printing industry, the book trade and the library system. In a careful procedure - preliminary jury / jury books were chosen whose book design with cover, dust jacket and illustrations, typography, printing and bookbinding processing was merged into an aesthetic and content-related complete work.
