Elmar Faber
Elmar Faber (born April 1, 1934 in Deesbach ; † December 3, 2017 in Leipzig ) was a German editor and publisher . From 1983 to 1992 he was the publisher of the East Berlin construction publishing house . In 1990 he founded the publishing house Faber & Faber together with his son Michael Faber .
Life
After high school in Jena Elmar Faber studied from 1954 to 1959 when Ernst Bloch , Theodor Frings and Hans Mayer at the University of Leipzig German . In 1956 he joined the SED . He then worked as an editor and later as editor-in-chief of the scientific journal of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . In 1968 he switched to the Bibliographisches Institut Leipzig as a lecturer , where he also worked as a publishing assistant.
From 1975 to 1992 Faber was then at the head of several large East German publishing houses. From 1975 he was the publisher of Edition Leipzig , from 1983 to 1992 publisher of Aufbau-Verlag and Rütten & Loening . In 1985, just one day after SED cultural director Hager had personally forbidden him to publish Christoph Hein's novel “ Horns Ende ”, he delivered the book, which he had long since had it printed, to the bookstore, where it was a day later was already sold out.
After the peaceful revolution in the GDR , he became a member of the PDS in 1990 . and in September of the same year founded the publishing house Faber & Faber with his son Michael in Berlin , with which he relocated to Leipzig in 1995 - a "sign against the bleeding of the formerly most important German publishing location". The publishing house stopped its work in 2011 and Faber ended his active publishing activities.
The burial took place on December 19, 2017 in the Leipzig South Cemetery . The funeral speech was held by Christoph Hein .
Memberships
From 1976 to 1990, Faber was chairman of the publishers' committee of the German Booksellers Association in Leipzig . He was also a longstanding board member of the Pirckheimer Society for Book Art and Bibliophilia .
