route

The start took place in Monteveglio. Then there was a 60-kilometer flat loop around Monteveglio. The last 135 kilometers were contested on a circuit around Monteveglio. One lap was 13.5 kilometers long and included a 1.6 kilometer climb to Zappolino , which is an average of seven percent steep. The circuit had to be lapped ten times.

Race course

Due to the high speed in the field, a small leading group was only able to pull away a little more than 32 kilometers before the finish. After joining two smaller groups, 13 men were at the top. Among others, Roger Kluge (Germany), Christopher Juul (Denmark / both Orica), Sébastien Reichenbach (Switzerland / FDJ), Clément Chevrier (France / AG2R), Anthony Perez (France / Cofidis), Sergei Tschernezki (Russia / Astana) , Andrea Vendrame (Italy / Androni) and Danny van Poppel (Netherlands / Sky). At the beginning of the penultimate lap, the outliers had about half a minute ahead of the field. On the way to Zappolino, Juul-Jensen, Vendrame, Tschernezki and Reichenbach attacked from the escape group. In the following lap, the four outliers as well as the rest of the leading group were caught up.

About eight kilometers from the finish, Alberto Bettiol (Italy / Cannondale Drapac) attacked from the field with other drivers. Also there was Luis León Sánchez (Spain / Astana), who attacked a little later and drove away from the group. Sanchez was no longer overtaken and thus won the race. A larger group followed six seconds later. This made up the other places in the sprint. Second was Sonny Colbrelli (Italy / Bahrain-Merida) and third was Elia Viviani (Italy / Sky).
