history

The origins of the castle of Monteveglio, in whose protection the place Monteveglio arose, go back to the 11th century. In 1092 the castle held by the Canossa was besieged by Heinrich IV for four months in vain. In the same year the construction of the abbey began. After Mathilde von Canossa's death in 1115, the castle remained in the possession of Canossa. In the following years Monteveglio came under the influence of the two rival Signories of Modena and Bologna and changed hands several times. In 1157 Monteveglio fell to Bologna, but was sacked by the Bolognesi in 1170 because Bologna had not been given military support. The last more significant event was the siege of the castle in March 1527 by the mercenaries of Charles V , who were about to take the castle before a sudden onset of winter made it give way. After that, Monteveglio slowly lost its military importance. In 1803 Monteveglio was attached to the municipality of Serravalle before it formed an independent municipality in 1810. At the end of the 19th century, the new Monteveglio was built east of the castle hill.

On January 1, 2014, Monteveglio formed the new municipality of Valsamoggia together with the municipalities of Bazzano , Castello di Serravalle , Crespellano and Savigno . The merger of the municipalities was preceded by a referendum on November 25, 2012, in which a majority in Castello di Serravalle, Crespellano and Monteveglio voted for and in Bazzano and Savigno a majority against the merger. Support was highest in Monteveglio at 59.03%. The results of all five municipalities added together resulted in a vote of 51.46% for the merger. The districts of Formica, Montebudello, Oliveto, Stiore and Ziribega also belonged to the former municipality.

Attractions

For centuries, Monteveglio was the battlefield of many historical conflicts between various rulers. Around the medieval castle settlement of Monteveglio Alto and the abbey of Santa Maria Assunta built by Mathilde von Canossa, you can go on mountain hikes in the Parco regional dell'Abbazia di Monteveglio (the regional natural park of the Abbey of Monteveglio). The park boundaries cover an area of approximately 1000 hectares. The abbey and Monteveglio Alto are the main attractions. Of the castle complex, the castle gate through which you enter Monteveglio Alto and a fortified tower from the 13th century are preserved.

The rural village of San Teodoro is now the seat of the park administration. A documentation center for the environment with a specialist library and a laboratory was built in the main building, where there are also rooms for seminars, courses and conferences. One room is also used to store the park's finds.

In particular, the valley around the Rio Ramato is suitable for teaching purposes from an ecological point of view because of the density of the different habitats . This area, divided into destinations and trails, extends over 30 hectares.

Other places

Excellent cuisine can be enjoyed in the town of Oliveto , which boasts Casa Grande dell'Ebreo (Great House of the Jew). In Montebudello, the 16th century tower of the Church of S. Andrea in Conegliano overlooks the Panaro valley .
