The sudden death of the exceptional Italian racing driver Tazio Nuvolari on August 11, 1953 caused dismay in the entire motorsport world, including the organizers of the 1000-mile Mille Miglia , Renzo Castagneto, Aymo Maggi and Giovanni Canestrini. Together with Franco Mazzotti, who died in World War II, they initiated and implemented the so-called “most beautiful race in the world”.

In memory of Nuvolari, the Gran Premio Nuvolari was created , a road race that led through the Po Valley through Cremona via Mantua to the finish in Brescia .

In 1955, the British racing driver Stirling Moss and his navigator Denis Jenkinson in a Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with the starting number 722 completed the Gran Premio Nuvolari in just 39 minutes and 54 seconds at an average speed of 198.496 km / h.

At the same time as the road race was banned by the Italian government after the Alfonso de Portago accident with a total of eleven deaths in the 1957 Mille Miglia , the Gran Premio Nuvolari was also banned and was therefore forgotten.

The members of the Montuan Mantova Corse (Motorsport Club) Luca Bergamaschi, Marco Marani, Fabio Novelle and Claudio Rossi had the goal of making the much too small and inconspicuous Tazio Nuvolari Museum in the heart of Mantova larger and more appropriate for the racing driver. Together with the Swiss watch manufacturer Eberhard & Co. , who designed a watch model in honor of Tazio Nuvolari, the Gran Premio Nuvolari was driven again for the first time in 1991.

The route, which is changed every year, starts and finishes in Mantua and includes both historic racetracks such as the Autodromo Imola and the towns of Rimini , Siena and Ferrara .

The event and its ranking are now part of the Italian championship of classic car rally events. At the Gran Premio Nuvolari, the best teams in the world who specialize in regularity rallies with classics compete today.

Teams from 16 nations complete a total of more than 70 special tests over 1,000 kilometers with their classic cars built up to 1969. In the new edition of the event, it is no longer just a question of speed, but rather of adhering to the specified time for the respective stage as precisely as possible.
