location

The American Viticultural Area Grand Valley is located west of the Grand Junction parish in Mesa County in the west of the state. The area lies within an intensely agricultural area called the Grand Valley along the Colorado River . The maximum 48 × 8 km area has been worked since the late 19th century and George A. Crawford planted the region's first commercial vineyard in 1890.

Today about 75 percent of all Colorado wineries are in the Grand Valley AVA. The vineyards of Grand Valley are distributed at altitudes of up to 1,400 meters above sea level. Mesa County has warm, sometimes hot summers and cold, snowy winters. In particular, the temperature differences between day and night are sometimes high and lengthen the vines' vegetation cycle. In summer it can get very cold at night despite high daytime temperatures. However, the risk of frost is reduced by good cold air drainage.
