The Great Whale River ( French for "Big Wal -flow"; English Great Whale River ) is a river in the region Nunavik in the Canadian province of Quebec .

It flows from the lake Lac Saint-Lusson , flows through the Lac Bienville to the west to Hudson Bay . While the lower course of the river (below Lac Bienville) has a very strong current with many waterfalls (15-20 m high) and rapids, the upper course consists of a series of lakes that are connected by steep rapids.

The lake Lac Néret on the upper reaches of the Grande rivière de la Baleine is now part of the Réservoir Laforge-2 , which is fed by the Caniapiscau reservoir and is mainly drained to La Grande Rivière for energy generation.

The easiest access for canoe tourists is on the Transtaïga route on Lac Montausier ( ).

The two places Kuujjuarapik (mostly inhabited by Inuit ) and Whapmagoostui ( Cree settlement) are located at the mouth of the river - near the former RCAF Great Whale River military airfield . Together, the two places were formerly known as the Great Whale River and Poste-de-la-Baleine.

The section of the river between Lac Bienville and the mouth of the Rivière Coats was then also known as the Abchigamich River . However, this name was dropped by the Commission de geographie du Québec in 1946.
