Granville Roland Fortescue
Granville Roland "Rolly" Fortescue (born October 12, 1875 in New York City , † April 21, 1952 ) was an American officer, a rough rider , who served with his cousin, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt , in Cuba and his advisor during in his first administration as US President , later a journalist and 1920 war correspondent for the London Standard during the Rif War in Spanish Morocco . He wrote for the London Daily Telegraph during World War I and the Spanish Civil War .
Career
Fortescue attended Yale College and then the University of Pennsylvania . In 1898 he dropped out of college and then volunteered for 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry . He graduated from Army Staff College in 1904 . Fortescue held the rank of captain . During the Spanish-American War he was wounded as a rough rider at the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba and served in the Philippines . He was then stationed in Japan as a US military attaché during the Russo-Japanese War . Along with other Western military attachés, he had two complementary missions, supporting the Japanese and observing Japanese troops in the field during the Russo-Japanese War. During the First World War he served as an artillery officer. Then he finished his military service. After his death in 1952 he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. and is the only Roosevelt to be buried there.

Granville Roland Fortescue was the son of Congressman Robert Roosevelt (1829-1906) and his lover Marion Theresa "Minnie" O'Shea Fortescue (1849-1902). His father married his mother after the death of his first wife Elizabeth "Lizzie" Thorn Ellis Roosevelt (1830-1887) and then adopted him and his two siblings Kenyon (1870-1939) and Maude (1880-1961). He was also the nephew of Theodore Roosevelt senior (1831-1878), the cousin of US President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) and the grandcousin of the first lady Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962).
On June 4, 1910, Fortescue married Grace Hubbard Bell (1883–1979), a niece of the inventor Alexander Graham Bell and an heiress of the Bell Telephone Company fortune. Also present at the wedding reception was Captain Archibald Butt , who served with Fortescue as Presidential Advisor in the White House .
The couple had three daughters. An alleged rape of the daughter Thalia Massie (1911-1963) involved his wife in 1932 in Hawaii in a murder trial (" Massie affair "). She then returned to her quiet life with her husband, moving with him between their homes on Long Island and Palm Beach , depending on the season . Another daughter worked as an actress under her stage name Helene Whitney (1914-1990).
