The Grawand (Italian Croda delle Cornacchie ), formerly also called Krahwand , from Krähe, is a 3251  m slm high mountain peak in the Schnalskamm , a mountain range in the Ötztal Alps in the Italian province of South Tyrol . About 50 meters to the west below the summit are a hotel and the mountain station of the Schnalstal Glacier Railway , which goes up from Kurzras in Schnalstal . In the immediate vicinity of the Hochjochferner there is a ski area that could even be operated in summer until 2013. The Grawand was first climbed in 1853 on the occasion of the kk military triangulation .

Location and surroundings

The Grawand is located on the southern edge of the extensive Hochjochferner, which here stretches up to a height of almost 3200 meters. Neighboring mountains along the ridge in the northwest are the 3202 meter high (according to other information 3195 m) Graue Wand and in the northeast, separated by the Fineiljoch (3125 m), the black wall with 3354 meters. To the southwest, the Schnalskamm falls at this point down into the Schnalstal and to the northeast over the Hochjochferner down into the Rofental . The next permanently populated place is the South Tyrolean Kurzras, which is about one kilometer as the crow flies in a south-westerly direction.

Tourist development

The Glacier Hotel Grawand is located just below the Grawand summit at an altitude of 3212 meters, which can only be reached via the cable car, which has been in existence since 1975, or on foot from Kurzras. It serves as a base for the immediately adjacent glacier ski area on the Hochjochferner. Hiking trails lead to the Schöne Aussicht refuge in the north, about two and a half kilometers away ( Albergo Bella Vista at 2842 meters above sea level) and on to the alpine path crossing at Hochjoch (2770 m), where the border with Austria is crossed. A path in a south-easterly direction leads down into the Fineil valley and further over the Vernagt reservoir to Our Lady in Schnalstal.
