The Accra Great Olympics Football Club , or Great Olympics or Oly for short , is a football club from the Ghanaian capital Accra, founded in 1954 . Great Olympics is currently (2018) organized as a corporation in the form of a Limited . The club logo contains the Olympic rings and the words peace / friendship / unity ( German  Peace / Friendship / unit ) as an expression of the Olympic spirit. The origin of the nickname “Wonder Club” is not clear.

history

Great Olympics was founded on April 21, 1954 by former members of Standfast FC , who had previously broken up with the dispute. Even in the new club, there were major internal disputes over the decades, which, however, could be settled in the spirit of the Great Olympics. The club took part in the canceled football championship in 1956 and two years later was one of the eight founding members of the Ghana Football League . In 1958, Great Olympics defeated the Togolese national soccer team 2-1 in a friendly match , never before had a club team from the Gold Coast played an international match against a national team.

In 1970 and 1974 the club was able to win the Ghanaian championship twice. With a 2-1 final victory over Brong Ahafo United FC , the "Wonder Club" secured the victory of the national soccer cup for the first time in 1975 . Further cup victories followed in 1983 with a 3-0 win over Bofoakwa Tano FC and in 1995, when they were able to prevail 1-0 in the final against city rivals Hearts of Oak . Four years later, on the other hand, they lost 3-1 to the “Phobians” in the cup final. For the first time in 2004 and 2008, the club rose to the second-rate division One League , but was able to celebrate the direct promotion. After relegated from the first class in May 2010, it took until January 2015 before Great Olympics was again represented in the Premier League. In a tight season finale , the direct relegation followed. Great Olympics continued the trend as an elevator crew with promotion in 2016 and subsequent relegation in 2017. This was followed by a legal dispute with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over the alleged use of unauthorized players from other clubs. As a result, the club, which plays its home games at the Accra Sports Stadium , was resumed in the increased Premier League for the 2020 season together with the King Faisal Babes .

The club's best-known former players include Hans Nunoo Sarpei , Daniel Addo , Nuru Sulley , Daniel Quaye , Emmanuel Clottey , Richard Kingson , Sam Ibiam , Paa Nii Lutterodt , Issah Ahmed , Bernard Aryee , Razak Pimpong , Cofie Bekoe , Ali Ibrahim , Habib Mohamed , Laryea Kingston , Cecil Jones Attuquayefio , Charles Asampong Taylor , Godwin Attram , George Alhassan , Mohammed Polo and Frank Odoi .
