Greenbrier is a city with the status of city in Faulkner County in the US -amerikanischen State Arkansas with 4,992 inhabitants (2012).
geography
Greenbrier is 20 kilometers north of Conway and 80 kilometers northwest of Little Rock . The US Highway 65 runs north-south through Greenbrier.
history
The native people of the region were the Quapaw and later the Cherokee Indians . The first settlers came to the area in 1818 and named the place after a fellow citizen Henderson Moore Mooresville . When a post office opened in 1857, however, the place was renamed Greenbrier . This name was chosen because very extensive populations of stinging winds ( Smilax ) (English: greenbrier ) grew in the area, which is characteristic of the region . The main livelihood of the inhabitants was agriculture, and peaches , apples and cotton were grown.
Today there are still many historically valuable buildings from the Wilhelminian era in Greenbrier, which are listed in the list of entries in the National Register of Historic Places in Faulkner County . These are: the Dennis and Christine Garrison House , the James and Jewell Salter House , the Merritt House , the SD Merritt House and the Spears House .
Due to the scenic location with the nearby lakes Lake Bennett , Brewer Lake , Lake Conway and Greers Ferry Lake , the place is now also active for tourism. Nearby also located Woolly Hollow State Park , and a 1990 founded over 330 acres large protected area where elephants are kept. Many people who work in Conway, the county seat of Faulkner County, commute to Greenbrier.
Demographic data
In 2012 a population of 4992 people was determined, which corresponds to an increase of 64.1% compared to 2000. The average age of 30.6 years in 2012 was well below the value of Arkansas, which was 42.2 years. Many young people in training live in Greenbrier because of the attractive school system. 10.0% of today's residents can be traced back to immigrants from Germany. Other noteworthy immigrant groups during the early days of the town came from Ireland ( 11.7%) and England ( 7.7%) .
