Greensboro is a city in the US state of Alabama and is the county seat of Hale County . In 2000 the place had 2731 inhabitants. The place was founded in the early 19th century under the name Troy , which was changed to Greensborough in 1823 in honor of Nathanael Greene , a hero of the Revolutionary War . The name was later shortened to Greensboro. In Greensboro is the Magnolia Grove Historic House Museum with an antebellum house in the Greek Revival style.

Demographics

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Greensboro had 2,731 people. The population density was 443.0 people per km ². There were 1142 housing units at an average of 185.3 per km ². Greensboro's population was 38.30% white , 60.89% black or African American , 0.04% Native American , and 0.77% named two or more races. 0.88% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Greensboro were distributed to 1026 households out of which 32.3% were living in children under 18 years of age. 35.1% of households were married, 27.3% had a female head of the household without a husband and 32.9% were not families. 31.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 14.6% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.21.

The urban population was divided into 28.6% minors, 10.5% 18–24 year olds, 20.9% 25–44 year olds, 20.5% 45–64 year olds and 19.4% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were 86.8 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 74.6 men.

The median household income in Greensboro was 22,930 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 28,990 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 36,071, compared with $ 23,224 for women. The per capita income in Blooming Prairie was $ 13,271. 35.3% of the population and 27.2% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 47.1% of minors and 26.2% of those aged 65 and over.
