Greg Quill

Greg Quill (born 1947 in Sydney , Australia , † May 5, 2013 in Hamilton , Canada ) was an Australian musician , singer and journalist . He worked as a columnist for the Toronto Star newspaper until his death . Greg became known as the lead singer for the Australian band Country Radio in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Early life and music career

Quill's music career began in the 1960s as a solo artist in Sydney, where he also received his BA in English Language and Literature in 1970 . He worked briefly as a teacher at a Catholic high school in Bankstown , a suburb of Sydney, until he was hired as an editor by David Elfick . He was also hired as editor of the weekly pop music magazine Go-Set , as a columnist and as a regional editor .

During this time, Quill operated The Shack , a popular late 1960s venue in Narrabeen, a suburb of Sydney on the northern beaches. Music producer Gus NcNeil (a former rock singer with Sydney's rock band Gus & The Nomads ) signed Quill to his own record label Cellar Music .

In 1970 McNeil also produced Quill's first commercial recording of the single Fleetwood Plain and the accompanying album of the same title for EMI Australia. The album was released by EMI's subsidiary Harvest Records , although the first single Fleetwood Plain was released by Columbia Records .

To promote the album, Quill formed the band Country Radio .

After the music career

In 1978 the band broke up while touring in Australia, and Quill returned to Canada alone. This initially led to the end of his music career. In Canada, he married Ellen Davidson and had a family. Quill became a prominent journalist and songwriter .

Quill worked for various magazines and published books on Bon Jovi (1987), Michael Jackson (1988), The Rolling Stones (1989) and many other artists.

He has been a journalist since 1983 and occasionally appeared on TV and radio as a commentator . He also worked as a columnist for the Toronto Star .

The return to music

The spontaneous reunion in Melbourne in 1999 with two of his former band members made Quill return to his music career.

In 2003 the new album So Rudely Interrupted by Greg Quill and Kerryn Tolhurst, a former band member of Country Radio, was released. The duo's album was released in Canada by True North Records .

From June 2006 to March 2008 Quill had a weekly Canadian radio show River of Song on Sirius Canada .

In 2009 Quill went back to Australia to host two shows in his hometown, with the support of his former band members.

In 2011 Quill toured Australia's east coast; he also recorded a new album that should be released in 2012. Most recently Quill performed with the band Ironbark .

death

A month before his death, Quill announced a collaboration with Warner Music Australia to re-release his old recordings from the 1970s and 1980s. He also planned to return to Australia to give concerts and thereby promote sales.

Greg Quill died in May 2013 at the age of 66 of pneumonia and the recently diagnosed sleep apnea . He worked as a journalist for the Toronto Star until his death .
