Gregorio Guglielmi (born December 13, 1714 in Rome , † February 2, 1773 in Saint Petersburg ) was an Italian fresco painter of the 18th century.

Life

He was a student of Francesco Trevisani or Sebastiano Conca and was encouraged by Cardinal Alessandro Albani . Guglielmi's earliest works can be found in Rome, but soon he expanded his field of activity to include Central and Northern Europe.

Cardinal Neri Corsini commissioned him to decorate the historical part of the Bibliotheca Corsiniana. Guglielmi also worked in San Giovanni de Matha (1744–48), in the church of Santissima Trinità degli Spagnoli, Rome, and in the refectory of Sant'Agostino ( Moltiplicazione dei pani e dei pesci , 1750–51). In 1753 Guglielmi went to Dresden and in 1755 to Vienna , where, among other things, he frescoed the ceilings of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Great Gallery in Schönbrunn Palace (both works have been destroyed in the original, the one in Schönbrunn Palace partly as a result of the war, the ballroom of the academy entirely due to a fire in 1961; both were reconstructed by Paul Reckendorfer ). In 1764 Guglielmi worked in Berlin and in 1765 in Augsburg's Schaezlerpalais . He also worked in Turin and Saint Petersburg. His works are in the transition from Baroque and Classicism .
