Gregory Jaczko

Gregory B. Jaczko ( / ˈjɑːskoʊ / ; born October 29, 1970 in Norristown , Pennsylvania ) is an American government official. From 2009 to 2012 he was chairman of the state nuclear regulatory authority, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

Beginnings and training

Jaczko grew up in Albany , New York . He studied physics and philosophy at Cornell University in Ithaca , where he obtained a bachelor's degree in both subjects in 1993 . In 1999 he received his PhD in particle physics from the University of Wisconsin – Madison .

Political career

Jaczko worked in Washington, DC as a Congressional Science Fellow for Democratic Congressman Ed Markey of Massachusetts . He taught at Georgetown University in Washington, DC under Dr. Francis Slakey an associate professor of physics and state activity, advised the United States Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (Committee of the Senate Environment and Public Works) in the field of nuclear power and was Appropriations director (paymaster) of Senator Harry Reid of Nevada and his advisor on political issues affecting the natural sciences.

Jaczko was sworn in on January 21, 2005 as commissioner for the NRC nuclear regulatory agency. On May 13, 2009, President Barack Obama appointed him to succeed Dale E. Klein as chairman of the organization. Jaczko's term of office would have run until June 2013. However, he resigned in May 2012. As the highest-ranking administrative officer and official representative of the agency, Jaczko was responsible for the overarching guidelines as well as for budgetary matters and for certain employee concerns. In addition, everything that may come to the agents of the authority in the event of an emergency also fell within his scope. He was succeeded by Allison Macfarlane .

Political location

Jaczko is critical of the nuclear industry. He is committed to being able to best protect the environment and public safety and health by disseminating the necessary knowledge as widely as possible in society. He has encouraged licensees, sellers, advocacy groups, local and regional administrations, and the general public in general, to actively join the political ambitions of his agency.

In his endeavor to make safety regulations for nuclear power plants stricter, he has also worked towards the fact that new such power plants should be designed to be able to provide sufficient resistance to the impact of aircraft. In the 2012 vote on the planned Vogtle nuclear power plant , Jaczko voted against the other four committee members, who supported the approval application by a majority.
