Grégory Mertens (born February 2, 1991 in Brussels , † April 30, 2015 in Genk ) was a Belgian football player .
Career
Mertens started playing football in the youth of RSC Anderlecht . He switched to KAA Gent via VC Groot Dilbeek . In 2010 he rose there from the U-19s to the professional team, which plays in the Jupiler Pro League . However, he was not used. In 2011 he moved to Cercle Bruges , where he played 60 league games by 2014. He got three goals. He was then transferred to KSC Lokeren for a transfer fee of 700,000 euros . There he came to 22 league games.
death
On April 27, 2015 Mertens suffered a heart attack during a game between the U-23s of KSC Lokeren and KRC Genk . He was then treated in a hospital in Genk , but died there on April 30, 2015 at the age of 24.
