Greigh (noble family)
Greigh also Greig ( Russian : Грейг) is the family name of a Baltic noble family with Scottish roots, they descended from the MacGregor clan . The family was enrolled in the Courland knighthood .
history
The Greig family (English spelling) came from the MacGregor clan , after the forcible dissolution of the Scottish clans by James VI. several clan members adopted new names, including Greig. The spelling changed every now and then from Greig (English) to Greigh ( Baltic States and Russia ). Charles Greig was a Scottish captain , he and his family lived in Inverkeithing, Scotland . His son Samuel (* 1736) had entered the Royal Navy at a young age and his career took off. The Russian Empire was in the middle of the 18th century in the reorganization of its navy and had turned to Great Britain , which should support them with experienced naval officers. Samuel Greigh was one of them and was quickly promoted to sea captain because of his outstanding qualities . Samuel G. had settled with his family in Reval as he served in the Baltic fleet . He was followed in the male line by his sons Alexis Greigh (also Russian admiral) and Samuel Greig (Russian consul in London ), as well as his grandson Samuel Alexejewitsch Greigh (Russian finance minister). As a result of his fame and in recognition of his services to the Russian Empire and the Baltic Sea Governorate , Samuel Greigh and his descendants were accepted into the Courland Knighthood.
Naming
The Greigia plant was named after Greigh by Eduard August von Regel in 1864 , and Tulipa geigii was named after them in 1873 . In 1820, Admiral Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen named the Niau Atoll in French Polynesia after Greigh.
