Greeks in Kazakhstan
The majority of Greeks in Kazakhstan are descendants of the early Pontic Greeks who livedin southern Russia and the Caucasus region andwere deported thereon an order from Joseph Stalin . First the Crimean Greeks in 1944 based on resolution 5984 of June 2, 1944. Later from the Caucasus, the Greeks from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan in June 1949, February 1950 and August 1950. A total of 60,000 Greeks were exiled.
In 2014, almost 9,000 Greeks lived in Kazakhstan in 17 communities which, together with the Greek Community of Kyrgyzstan, form the "Federation of Friendship of Greek Communities in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan". The federation prints a newspaper, organizes dance events and offers dance and language courses . In 2007, six ethnic Greek teachers funded by the General Secretariat of Greeks Abroad were employed in Kazakhstan. Greek is also taught by two teachers seconded from Greece.
