Grimmia is a genus of deciduous moss in the Grimmiaceae family .
features
The 5 to 40 (70) millimeter large plants form loose lawns to dense cushions. The leaves are oblong-ovate to lanceolate, rarely tongue-shaped, concave or keeled, have a well-developed vein that extends to the tip of the leaf, further flat, inwardly curved or recurved leaf margins and often a glass tip. The lamina is single to multilayered. Leaf cells are shorter or longer rectangular at the leaf base, but never thickened like a barbed wire as in Racomitrium species. The cells in the middle of the leaf are round, square and usually thick-walled.
The species are dioecious or autocratic (antheridia and archegonia on different branches on the same plant). Brood bodies are formed in some of the species. The short to long seta is erect or curved, the spore capsule is erect to pendulous, the kalyptra cap-shaped or bonnet-shaped. The columella (central column in the spore capsule) remains in the capsule and is not connected to the capsule lid.
distribution
The genus Grimmia is common on all continents. Most species prefer dry and temperate to cold climates and are rock dwellers.
