Rudolf Schasching

Rudolf Schasching (* 1957 in Engelhartszell , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian opera singer ( tenor ). His repertoire includes roles from the character subject to the difficult hero subject . Since 2003 he has held the title of Saarland Chamber Singer .

Life

After completing his basic musical training with the St. Florian Boys' Choir, he studied singing with Hilde Rössel-Majdan at the Vienna University of Music . In 1983 he completed his studies with a diploma . After a first engagement at the Vienna Chamber Opera , he was engaged at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken , initially as a lyric tenor (Tamino and others), then very soon as a youthful heroic tenor (Siegmund, Max im Freischütz , Lohengrin and Parsifal) and character tenor . He remained connected to this house for over two decades.

Since then he has been guest at leading European theaters such as the Vienna State Opera , the Opéra Bastille in Paris , the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona , Het Muziektheater in Amsterdam , at the Salzburg , Glyndebourne and Bregenz festivals .

He was also a member of the Zurich Opera House from 2000 to 2012 , where he appeared in a wide variety of roles, including Siegfried the Dragon Slayer in Richard Wagner's Götterdämmerung in a production by Robert Wilson under the musical direction of Philippe Jordan , as Herodes in Richard Strauss ' Salome (production: Sven-Eric Bechtolf , musical direction: Christoph von Dohnányi ) and as Aegisth in his Elektra (production: Martin Kušej , musical direction: Daniele Gatti ), but also as Monostatos in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Magic Flute under Nikolaus Harnoncourt , with whom he has a lively collaboration.

  • In 2013 he was awarded the Culture Medal of the Province of Upper Austria.
