The Grippenbach (also Krippenbach ) is a 2.5 km long orographically left tributary of the Sunderbach in Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia .

River course

The Grippenbach arises in the south of the Brackwede district of Bielefeld, not far from the Südring and the source of its receiving waters Sunderbach, in a forest and flows off in a south-westerly direction. After just a few meters, the body of water absorbs the Feldbach, which tapers to the left, and then crosses the four-hectare Brackweder Lake, which is used as a retention basin and is integrated into a local recreation area .

After crossing under the Hamm – Minden railway line , the Grippenbach initially leads through wooded area and finally flows into the Sunderbach east of Ummeln on a meadow known as the Wordbruch . During its entire course, the body of water is exclusively in the area of the Brackweder district, as Ummeln also belongs to this district.

The Grippenbach overcomes a height difference of 20 meters along its course, resulting in a mean bed gradient of 8.0 ‰.

Water quality

The water quality of the creek flu is, according to the water quality report from 2008 in the upper and middle reaches in a very heavily polluted state (Class III-IV). The Grippenbach is the only body of water in the Bielefeld city area that currently has to be classified in this quality class. In the lower reaches, however, at least quality class II-III and thus a critical load can be achieved.

etymology

The Grippenbach, which is also called "Krippenbach" in regional parlance, was known under its Low German name "Greipenbach" until the beginning of the 20th century . A "Greipe" (or High German "Greife") was an agricultural device similar to a pitchfork , the shape of which was reminiscent of the branching arms of the water. The brook “reached” with its source arms into the marshland east of Ummeln and thus got its name. Over the years, the name of the water changed to "Grippenbach" or "Krippenbach", because the original meaning of the name was no longer known and therefore a wrong translation was made into the standard German language. Correctly, the name of the water would have to be "Greifenbach".
