Brackwede ( Westphalian Quirkendorp [ ˈkʰviɐkn̩ˌduɐp ]) is the name of a district of the independent city of Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia and the name of the largest district in this district. The Brackwede district is located in the southwest of Bielefeld and emerged from Brackwede, an independent town until 1972. The city district had 40,753 inhabitants in 2019

Pronunciation and spelling of the name

The original pronunciation is [ˈbraːkˌvedə] , with a long a (read: Braakwede). The c is an expansion sign , which means that the preceding a is pronounced long. In the meantime, the written German pronunciation with a short a is already very common; at the same time, the emphasis is usually shifted to the second syllable, that is, [ˌbrakˈveːdə] . The correct pronunciation therefore partly serves as a shibboleth for Bielefeld people.

The East Westphalian name Quirkendorp derives from Westphalian Quirke , couch grass ' and Westphalian Dorp , village' from.

The Gütersloh districts of Avenwedde and Isselhorst border in the south and southwest, and the municipality of Steinhagen in the west . The Brackwede district is surrounded by Gadderbaum, Senne, Ummeln and Quelle.

Structure of the city district

The districts of Brackwede, Ummeln , Holtkamp and Quelle , which are only informally delimited, belong to the Brackwede district . Internally, the Brackwede district is divided into statistical districts 29 to 35 (Brackwede district), 36 (Ummeln and Holtkamp districts) and 37 and 38 (Quelle district).

history

From village to city

Brackwede was first mentioned in a document in 1151. In 1216 the landmark of the district, the Bartholomäuskirche, was mentioned for the first time. It was almost completely destroyed by fire on February 21, 1990, but has since been rebuilt. Around 1800 the place was still a purely rural settlement, the buildings of which were almost all grouped around the Bartholomäuskirche. The Brock (also Brook ) farmers have always been closely connected to the village of Brackwede, and their farms occupied the southwestern part of what is now the district. Brackwede was in the county of Ravensberg the main town of the Vogtei Brackwede belonging to the Sparrenberg office and a municipality in the canton of Brackwede of the same name in the Kingdom of Westphalia . After the end of the Napoleonic French era , Prussia took possession of the county of Ravensberg and with it Brackwede again. With the introduction of the Westphalian rural community order , the Brackwede office in the Bielefeld district was finally formed in December 1843 .

After the first commercial bleaching was established on the Lutter in 1849, other industrial companies settled there, including a spinning mill, a glassworks and machine works. In the period that followed, numerous other companies were founded, which made Brackwede an important location for industry and craft. Associated with industrialization was strong population growth.

The municipality of Brackwede received town charter on July 5, 1956 and left the Brackwede office in 1959. On January 1, 1970, the municipalities Ummeln, Quelle and Holtkamp and part of the municipality of Isselhorst were incorporated into the town of Brackwede through the law on the reorganization of the Wiedenbrück district and parts of the Bielefeld district.

The Brackwede district

Brackwede district office

As part of the municipal reorganization of the Bielefeld area , the city of Brackwede was incorporated into Bielefeld on January 1, 1973. In the enlarged city of Bielefeld, the Brackwede district was established, consisting of

  • the area of the city of Brackwede without the industrial and residential area protruding into the Gadderbaumer Tal (Spinnerei Vorwärts, Astawerke, Astastraße) and without the Brackweder part of the Sennefriedhof
  • the Rosenhöhe, which until then belonged to Senne I , with the then district hospital and the then district vocational school
  • a smaller part of Steinhagen in the Holtkamp area.

In addition, there are the two Catholic parishes Herz Jesu Brackwede (1891 Filialgemeinde, 1920 parish) and Sankt Michael Ummeln (1955 parish vicarie me V.), both of which belong to the Bielefeld-Lippe deanery of the Archdiocese of Paderborn . Together with the parishes from the districts of Senne and Sennestadt, they have formed the Catholic parish of St. Elisabeth Bielefeld since January 1, 2014 , after they were previously organized as a pastoral association.

  • Baptismal register of December 4, 1712: A "Peter Henrich", who hated at the Olderdissen farm, had his son named "Joh. Henrich "baptize.

Due to changed structures, the CDU was able to provide the district chairman in a civic coalition for the first time in 1989 and then until 2009. In 1999, 2004 and 2009 the CDU became the strongest party in Brackwede. In 2014, the SPD won 7 to 5 more seats than the CDU, while the FDP missed out on the district council.

In addition, Brackwede took over the sponsorship for the expellees from Münsterberg in Silesia in 1958 .

Culture and sights

Bartholomew Church

Bartholomew Church

The landmark Brackwedes is the Evangelical Lutheran Bartholomew's Church. It was built in 1892 as a cross-shaped hall church in neo-Gothic forms. The basement of the tower probably dates back to the 16th century. The building burned down completely in 1990. Then it was rebuilt in its old form.

Half-timbered house Baumhöfener

The half-timbered house at Hauptstrasse 27, which was plastered for a long time , is the former main house of the former Baumhöfener farm. The remaining buildings were demolished after abandoning their agricultural use. The farm name Baumhüter (Boimhoder - Bömschlüter - Baumhüter - Baumhöffener) is mentioned in the Ravensberger Urbar as early as 1556 . Parts of the inner framework are said to date from this time; this would make the house one of the oldest secular buildings still preserved in Brackwede and the surrounding area. In 1811/12, however, the outer walls were replaced by truss parts transferred from the Senne. The hall beam, designated in 1812, bears the following inscription:JOHANN HEINRICH BAUMHÖFENER MARGARETHE LOU WATERBÖER BUILT THESE TWO PEOPLE IN GOD'S NAME AND HAVE THESE ERECTED ANNO . MBHR. CH STRUNCK.Parts of the wall-mounted fittings came from the time after the renovation. The Westphalian Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Münster detailed the monument value of the building in 2005. However, the lower monument authority of the city of Bielefeld could not agree with this view and waived a protection status. In 2008 the building was extensively refurbished and converted into a restaurant, with the original substance being largely destroyed and the half-timbering freely added.

Other buildings

The Büscher house in Vogelruth 14 is one of the few older residential buildings that have been preserved during the town center redevelopment carried out in the late 1960s by 1821.

The "slate house" in the Kupferhammerpark, ancestral home of the Möller family of manufacturers, was built in 1772. It presents itself as a two-storey, slated half-timbered building based on the Bergisch model with a mansard roof and turrets . The entrance side is adorned with a pretty rococo portal .

Parks

Brackweder City Park

The Brackweder Stadtpark is located in the middle of the city district between the city ring and Berliner Straße. In addition to a rose garden, green and flower beds, it includes a playground redesigned in 2015 by those involved in the International Youth Community Service and a roller skating rink.

The Kupferhammerpark is located near the Möller works. The Lutter flows through it, which is dammed into three ponds here. The ponds are surrounded by an old beech forest, which is mainly composed of the common beech (Fagus sylvatica) . The trees reach heights of up to 20 meters. There are also individual oaks and birches interspersed. The undergrowth is mainly formed from numerous holly trees . The near-natural forest was converted into a landscape park by the Hamburg gardener Rudolph Jürgens towards the end of the 19th century and enriched with non-indigenous tree and shrub species. The area had been designated as a nature reserve for many years since 1948 . However, the protection ordinance was later deleted. The park is privately owned and is not open to the public.
