The Bielefeld district of Senne is located directly south of the Teutoburg Forest and covers the northern foothills of the Senne , after which it is named.

Expansion of the area of the city district

The westernmost and easternmost points of the Senne district are about ten kilometers apart, and the northernmost and southernmost points are about nine kilometers apart as the crow flies. Senne covers an area of 32.2 square kilometers.

In the south towards Verl and in the west and southwest towards the Gütersloh districts of Friedrichsdorf and Avenwedde, the city district boundary is also the city boundary of Bielefeld.

Structure of the city district

Senne I was originally a scattered settlement without a distinct village center. Today, three larger, spatially separated main settlement areas have emerged:

  • In the middle of the district is the district Windelsbleiche , which has been around an industrial core since the middle of the 19th century.
  • In the north of the district is the Buschkamp district , which has developed into a purely residential area on both sides of Bundesstraße 68 since the 1920s.
  • In the south of the district is the district of Windflöte , which was initially created as a refugee settlement after the Second World War .

In addition, there are other settlement areas that have emerged in the last few decades, such as the Schillingshofsiedlung and the Vennkampsiedlung .

history

Senne I.

The history of Senna can be traced back to the 12th century with the settlement of five farms. In 1676 the Senne farmers were first mentioned in a document. Senne belonged to the administrative area of Brackwede , the neighboring farmers of Heepen-Senne to the Heepen office . While it belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia (1807 to 1813), Heepen-Senne came under the administration of Brackwede as Senne II . At the same time, the name was changed from Senne to Senne I. After the return to Prussian rule shortly afterwards, this administrative structure was retained. Senne I belonged to the Brackwede office of the Bielefeld district until December 31, 1969, and was then a free municipality until December 31, 1972.

Senne district

On January 1, 1973, Senne I was incorporated into the urban district of Bielefeld through the municipal reorganization and the Senne district was formed. The areas of Senne I to the east of the A2 motorway came to the Sennestadt district, while all areas to the west of the motorway came from Sennestadt to Senne. The Sennefriedhof , until then mostly located in Brackwede, came completely to Senne. The Rosenhöhe with the then district hospital and the then district vocational school, until then part of Senne I, came to the Brackwede district. A sub-area of Senne I with around 370 inhabitants at that time was incorporated into the city of Gütersloh.

The district office of Senne is located at Windelsbleicher Straße 242. Until 1972, the municipal administration of Senne I was also located there.
