The large-leaved yarrow is a presumably deciduous, rosette-free, perennial, herbaceous hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 50 to 100 (rarely from 30) centimeters. A rhizome is formed. The stem is egg-shaped and slightly longer than it is wide. Its sections are lanceolate, 5 to 15 millimeters wide and sharply double serrated. The ray-flowers are white. Their tongues are at least as long as the shell.

The flowering period extends from July to September. The flowers are pollinated by insects, the seeds probably spread by the wind.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the large-leaved yarrow includes the Alps of France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Austria. The large-leaved yarrow grows in freshly seeped tall herbaceous vegetation and bushes in the subalpine region. It occurs mainly in the Alnetum viridis from the association Adenostylion alliariae. The species is nutrient-demanding and avoids lime. In Germany, this alpine plant is widespread in southwest Bavaria in the Allgäu . It occurs here at altitudes between 1200 and 1950 meters.
