The Great Armsberg , near Gerstungen , is 459.7  m above sea level. NN high, fully wooded elevation of the Richelsdorf Mountains on the border from the Werra-Meißner district in Hesse to the Wartburg district in Thuringia ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Große Armsberg is located in the eastern part of the Solztrottenwald natural area in the Richelsdorf Mountains . It is located between the Hessian towns of Unhausen in the east-northeast, Blankenbach in the west and Wölfterode in the west-northwest and Gerstungen in the southeast on the Werra in Thuringia . The Gerstunger Forst forest area lies on the mountain flanks and the Berlitzgrube forest estate about 500 m northeast of the mountain summit on the Hessian side. Its western neighbor is the Kleine Armsberg ( 465.8  m ) with the Armsberg ( 470.6  m ) on the other side .

In the GDR era, part of the inner-German border ran across the Großer Armsberg in a wide aisle , with the forest area on the Thuringian side inaccessible.

Gypsy grave

The grave of a gypsy woman lies on the hiking trail that runs along the border strip. The associated legend reports that she met the imperial general Pappenheim during the Thirty Years' War and that she saved him from death when he had to pass the Gerstunger Kohlbachtal. Out of anger over the failed plan, the woman was hunted down and fatally inflicted. She was buried under the gypsy oak at the camp of her clan on the border.
