The Big Happ , also Big Happ , is 3352  m above sea level. A. high mountain peaks of the Dorferkamm in the Venediger group in East Tyrol ( Austria ). It is located in the north of the municipality of Prägraten am Großvenediger . Neighboring peaks are the Südliche Happ and the Kleine Happ in the southwest and the Große Geiger in the northwest. The Große Happ is the highest point on the Dorferkamm.

Naming and history

"Happ" is a dialect expression for "sheep", which is why the name of the summit should actually be "Big Happ" and not "Big Happ". The first ascent of the Großer Happ took place in 1854 by measuring assistants, possibly also by H. v. Acken over the southwest flank. K. Mittermayer crossed the ridge for the first time to the Great Geiger in 1897. The northwest flank was overcome on August 20, 1922 by K. Schroetter and G. Strempel, and W. Blechschmidt, R. climbed the east face for the first time on August 18, 1933. Klose and E. Mille to the summit.

location

The Große Happ is located in the north of the Dorferkamm in the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park . To the east is the Stredacher Winkl basin with the Maurerbach , to the west the Dorfer Bach flows. The Große Happ falls to the east with very steep rock faces to the Dorferkees, to the west the mountain falls to the east wing of the Maurerkees. On the north ridge of the Großer Happ, the ridge descends in a first step to the north shoulder ( 3319  m above sea level ), followed by the Happscharte, which separates the Großer Happ from the Großer Geiger ( 3364  m above sea level ). In addition, the Große Happ radiates a long southwest ridge that houses the Südlichen Happ ( 3304  m above sea level ) and the southeast summit.

Promotion opportunities

The ascent to the Großer Happ takes place from the Essener-Rostocker Hütte or from the Johannishütte, initially on the marked trail of the Schweriner Weg. Below the Kleine Geiger, you leave the marked path and go west past the Kleiner Geiger on the west side of the Maurerkee, which is flatly crossed to the southwest spur of the mountain (danger of crevices). The south-west spur has climbing points ( I ) at the entrance , and after a short climb you reach the rubble-laden south- west ridge . The ascent to the summit takes place on it, with no further climbing areas to be mastered.

In addition to the normal route, there are several alternative routes, although first-time climbers of this variant were advised against the east face due to its fragility. The route over the north-west flank ( II ) takes place from the south-west ridge to the left over the glacier, with the north-west flank flanked to the left by the north ridge and to the right by the south-west ridge. The entrance to the northwest flank is on the left at a large block, which is first climbed. From there, the path leads upwards over a narrow band to the right to a small patch of flat land and then again across a band to the left. Another band on the left leads the bidder under a small overhang that blocks the flank at the top right. The overhang is crossed at the bottom left, where another overhang is reached. This can be climbed ( III + ) or bypassed by changing to a small notch in the southwest ridge.

For the ridge crossing to the Großer Geiger, the steep rock descent to the Happscharte takes place from the summit of the Großer Happ, whereby the north ridge is bypassed to the east and then the north shoulder is climbed on a ribbon to the ridge and the descent to the saddle takes place. Then the easy firn chimney is conquered in the opposite ascent to a brittle rock formation. The final ascent to the Großer Geiger takes place over this and on the south ridge.
