The Great Lafatscher is 2696  m above sea level. A. high summit of the Gleirsch-Halltal chain in the Karwendel and thus after the six Karwendel peaks , which reach a height of more than 2700  m , the seventh highest peak in the entire mountain range. It can be reached from the Halltal in about 4 hours.

The easiest ascent leads from the Wilde Bande-Steig , which runs south of the Rosskopf , the Vorderen Bachofenspitze and the Großer Lafatscher from the Stempeljoch ( 2215  m above sea level ) to the Lafatscher Joch ( 2081  m above sea level ), over the south ridge to the Summit.

The mighty 800  m high north face rises above the Großer Gschnierkar in the Hinterau valley .
