The Große Samithsee is a natural body of water in the district of Spechthausen , a district of the town of Eberswalde in the Brandenburg district of Barnim . It is located about two kilometers southwest of Finow airfield , seven kilometers west of the village of Spechthausen. The village of Melchow is three kilometers southeast, closer to the lake, as is Biesenthal, five kilometers southwest . The south-west bank of the Great Samithsee today forms the administrative border between the cities of Eberswalde and Biesenthal.

The Great Samithsee is located in a forest area in the NSG Finowtal-Pregnitzfließ . It has an area of 42 hectares, its water surface is 32  meters above sea level . The lake, which was 54.7 hectares in size and up to 16 meters deep in 1915, is surrounded by an extensive silting zone with a narrow swinging lawn belt and a broken forest of alder , pine and birch trees with strong undergrowth. Two small tributaries flow into the lake on the south-east side, the outflow on the north-west side flows into the Finow about one kilometer after leaving the lake . In order to keep more water in the region, moor areas were dammed and drainage ditches were made ineffective at the Samithsee in 2012 as part of the EU Interreg IV A project.

500 m east of the southern tip is the small Samithsee , which is enclosed by the swamp and can only be reached on foot in winter when there is frost .

history

The Great Samithsee was first mentioned in a document in 1315. The name of the lake can be derived from the old Polish word som = catfish. In 1595 three Kietzers (fishermen) fished on it and it had three yarn trains .

House on Samithsee 1935

From 1928 until the Second World War there was a hotel - restaurant with a large hall and a terrace facing the lake on the banks of the Great Samithsee . The foundation stone of Siegfried Kohl's (Berlin, Chausseestrasse 85) projected “Haus am Samithsee” in 1927 was laid on January 5th, and it opened on May 25th, 1928. The construction cost 250,000 Reichsmarks , and was sold to Ms. Brenneslava in 1929 through a foreclosure auction for 99,000 Reichsmarks Nitschke from Berlin, sold on by auction for 67,000 Reichsmarks in 1930. It could be reached on the road of the old military and trade route "Via Bysdal" from Spandau to Oderberg, which was also expanded in 1928 . The house was demolished after the war and the stones were used as building material to repair war damage. Remains of the foundation (concrete, iron parts, bricks) and a larger piece of concrete from the terrace facing the lake are still visible (as of 2019).
