The Gross Furkahorn is 3169  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the southern Uri Alps , north of the Furka pass . The border between the Swiss cantons of Uri and Valais runs over its summit .

Geographical location

The Gross Furkahorn lies in a mountain range that runs from north to south and descends from the Galenstock to the Furka Pass. The direct northern neighbor is the Sidelenhorn , to the south the Sidelengrat leads over the Sidelengratlücke ( 2958  m above sea level ) to the Klein Furkahorn . To the west is the Rhone Glacier , to the east a ridge falls to the Sidelen Glacier . The south wall is divided into steep slabs interrupted by bands of rubble, the so-called wall base plates. The actual summit consists of three rock spikes.

Summit routes

The normal route leads from the Hotel Belvédère on the edge of the Rhone glacier to the west flank, from there into a gap south of the summit and with easy climbing ( II-III degrees ) to the summit. A frequently undertaken climbing tour in the IV level of difficulty runs over the east-south-east ridge. The route is equipped with bolts . Numerous other Plaisier climbing routes with different difficulties and lengths are located in the wall base plates.
