The Grand Council of the Canton of Valais (French: Grand Conseil du canton du Valais ) is the legislative authority of the Canton of Valais .

General

The Great Council of Valais was created in 1839. Due to the historical importance of the Zenden in the former district administrator of the Republic of Valais , the election of the members of the Zenden or district was retained despite the different sizes of the constituencies.

Between 1839 and 1909 there was a seat in the Grand Council for every 1,000 district residents. This figure was raised to 1,100 residents in the 1913 Grand Council elections. The reduction of the Grand Council to a maximum of 130 members took place in the 1953 election.

In the years 1839 to 1847 the grand councils were elected by electors who delegated the communities to the Zenden election meeting . There was one voter for every 100 inhabitants of a municipality. Between 1847 and 1852, the district residents elected their representatives directly at the electoral assembly. The list election was made possible in 1852. The election of the grand councils has taken place in the municipalities since 1857. This introduced the ballot box with the ballot paper. The proportional representation came in 1921 for the first time used.

The term of office was initially two years and was extended to five years in 1847. Since 1857 the legislature has lasted four years.

A special feature is the simultaneous election of substitutes, the so-called substitutes. In 1847 there was a substitute for two councilors. Since 1852, the same number of substitutes as grand councilors have been elected.
