The local situation Grote Beck in the residential district Vohwinkel Center in Wuppertal District Vohwinkel goes back to an old Hofschaft. The location is completely absorbed by the 20th century buildings, but buildings with historical structures still exist.

etymology

The origin of the name Grotenbeck or Grotenbecke comes from ndt. Grot 'tall' and beek 'Bach'. With 'Großer Bach' the Rottscheidter Bach is meant here, which is now piped below the Kaiserstraße.

history

Grotenbeck is already documented in 1312, in 1433 Duv-Grotenbeck is mentioned.

A path, which is marked on the Topographia Ducatus Montani map from 1715 created by Erich Philipp Ploennies , led from the south of Gräfrath via Roßkamp via Nocken to the locality, which is labeled as Grotenbec . The path continued to Thurn and led to the center of Sonnborn .

Today the Vohwinkeler Hauptstraße, the Kaiserstraße in a west-east position leads through the Vohwinkeler depression and through the village. From here the Schillerstraße leads in a north-easterly direction up the northern slope of the depression.

Some historic houses are still preserved. The two houses Kaiserstraße 157 and Schillerstraße 1 are located on the hill at the obtuse angle to the confluence with Schillerstraße . The half-timbered houses, which are protected as a historical monument, date from the end of the 18th / beginning of the 19th century. On the other side of the street is the twin house Kaiserstraße 158/160 , which is also protected as a monument. Another historic building is the half-timbered house at Kaiserstraße 166.

Today's street

After this location, between 1925 and 1928 street Grotenbecker Straße , southwest of the core of the original location, was named. It was previously named Schwerinstrasse on July 7, 1904.
