Zdeněk Grygera [ ˈzdɛɲɛk ˈgrɪgɛra ] (born May 14, 1980 in Přílepy , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech football player . He was a defender and could be used both in central defense and on the right side of defense.
Career
In the club
From FK Zlín , where Grygera had matured as a footballer, he moved to the Czech first division team Petra Drnovice at the age of 18 . He immediately had a permanent place in the defense and achieved the best placement in the club's history with the club in 2000 with third place in the championship. He then moved to the champions Sparta Prague , where he saw the title defense as a supplementary player. In 2003, meanwhile an important regular player, he won his second championship title and then moved abroad.
From 2003 to 2007, the versatile defender played in the Dutch Eredivisie at the top club Ajax Amsterdam . There he was able to celebrate a championship, two cup wins and twice winning the Johan Cruyff Schaal , the Supercup trophy. Grygera also played numerous Champions League games for the Dutch.
In the summer of 2007, Zdeněk Grygera moved to the Italian record champions Juventus Turin , who had just been promoted back to Serie A after the manipulation scandal . There he is mostly a regular player in the season so far.
For the 2011/2012 season he moved to the English Premier League for Fulham FC . On December 6, 2012, Martin Jol announced that Grygera was ending his career.
In the national team
Zdeněk Grygera began his national team career in 1997 in the Czech U-17 selection . At the turn of the millennium he was a top performer in the Czech U-21 team and was able to celebrate second place with the team in 2000 at the U-21 European Championship in Slovakia .
After a total of 34 junior internationals, he made his debut on August 15, 2001 in the Czech national team . At the 2004 European Championships in Portugal , he was in the Czech squad and only failed with his team in the semifinals at the eventual European champions Greece . Grygera played four of the five games in this tournament. At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , he was also part of the squad and was again a regular in Karel Brückner's team. However, this time Grygera was eliminated with the Czech Republic after the preliminary round . In the World Cup qualifying round , he played six out of ten possible games. In October 2009 Grygera completed his last international match.
