Grzimek is a German biographical fiction film from 2015. It traces the life of the zoologist Bernhard Grzimek (1909–1987). The director of the film is Roland Suso Richter . action
The film begins right after the end of the war in 1945. Veterinarian Bernhard Grzimek fights for the continued existence of the Frankfurt zoo in the destroyed city and sees himself forced to take over its directorate, actively supported by his enthusiastic wife Hildegard. The great success of the rebuilt zoo gives him the opportunity to advertise the importance of animal and nature conservation in film and television. The highlights of this work are the television program A Place for Animals and the documentary film Serengeti Must Not Die , shot in Africa , with which he won an Oscar in 1960. Even after that, Grzimek repeatedly found ways to confront the public with the abuse and exploitation of animals and called for more conscious treatment of animals.
In contrast, the film reveals Grzimek's difficulties in the private sphere. His first wife Hildegard not only has to suffer from the heavy workload of her husband, but also from some extramarital affairs. As dearly as Grzimek loves his biological son Michael, he has little access to his adopted son Thomas. The accidental death of Michael during the filming of "Serengeti Must Not Die" is not only a personal burden for Grzimek, but also for his marriage, as his wife blames him. Grzimek finishes the film together with Michael's widow Erika, which leads to a relationship that ultimately causes the marriage to Hildegard to fail and which leads to irreconcilable hatred between the two women. The permanently resigned Thomas slips into criminality and takes his own life in 1980 at the age of 30. Grzimek marries Erika and adopts their sons, his grandchildren, as children.
In 1987 Grzimek died in Frankfurt and was buried next to his son Michael in Africa.
criticism
epd film judged that the film “got off to a somewhat difficult start”, but that it honors Grzimek's life's work without venerating him as a hero; Barbara Auer embodies the character she plays credibly.
