Guamatela tuerckheimii is an evergreen shrub from Central America that alone forms the plant family of the Guamatelaceae within the order Crossosomatales .

features

The species is an evergreen , prostrate shrub . The leaves are opposite, have stipules and are serrated. The nerve is palmate. The underside of the leaf is densely tomentose. The vascular bundles in the petiole are arranged in a ring.

The flowers have calyx and crown that are the same size, ten stamens and three deformed carpels that only at the tip of the pen have grown. The follicles remain enclosed by the sepals. Many seeds are formed, the endosperm of which is sparse.

Anatomy, embryology, and chemistry of this kind are virtually unknown, as is the number of chromosomes .

distribution

The species is restricted to Mexico , Guatemala, and Honduras . The generic name is an anagram of "Guatemala" (cf. Lobivia , Hatiora ).

Systematics

The species was first described in 1914 by the American botanist John Donnell Smith in the Botanical Gazette (volume 57, pp. 420-421) based on a specimen copy collected in 1902 by the German plant collector Hans von Türckheim (1853-1920) in Baja Verapaz in Guatemala . The species has only recently become a separate family. In the past it was mostly placed among the Rosaceae .
